Now that my first novel is finally being published, I remember my Irish father. On St Patrick’s Day 1985 he sang ‘The Old House” and ‘Down by the Green Bushes’ to my mother, my brother and me in the Duke of Wellington in Eaton Place, London. Then he  took my hand in his iron labourer’s grip and said, ‘Maybe one day Barry will write about us and who we are.’ He died suddenly a month later. Today, Tuesday 2 July, the book is being launched around the corner in Belgravia Books
When my brother and I were young kids, he convinced us that he knew Italian and sang the arias of his idol, Gigli, in beautiful gibberish. This was is favourite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPKBkjamc_s
